Celebrating a Birthday Through Environmental Action
The Kilimanjaro Consortium for Development and Environment (KCDE) marked a special milestone by celebrating the birthday of its founder, Rev. Prof. Aidan G. Msafiri, with a large-scale environmental initiative aimed at combating climate change.
Instead of traditional celebrations, the initiative focused on distributing over 10,000 tree seedlings to communities, schools, and religious institutions across the Kilimanjaro Region. The campaign highlights the importance of environmental stewardship and community participation in restoring ecosystems.
Trees Instead of Candles
Rev. Prof. Msafiri emphasized that celebrations should contribute to protecting the environment.
“It is not right to celebrate by lighting candles, as it contributes to carbon emissions. Instead, we should thank God through actions that protect the environment. Trees are life; they support the economy and sustain future generations.”
Supporting Institutions
The tree distribution was given to several key institutions, including:
- Moshi Catholic Cathedral
- Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania – Northern Diocese
- Kibosho Girls Secondary School
- TPC Mennonite Church
Hundreds of students and community members participated in planting trees, reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
Building a Culture of Environmental Responsibility
Religious and community leaders have welcomed the initiative, encouraging young people to plant and care for trees as part of their environmental responsibility. Some institutions are even integrating tree planting into their educational and spiritual programs.
Local authorities have also emphasized the need to protect newly planted trees and support reforestation efforts to preserve the Kilimanjaro ecosystem.
